Quick answer: Shop equestrian half pads at iRide EQ. Featuring shock-absorbing memory foam, genuine sheepskin, and shimmed correction technology from Redgum Saddlery, Equifit, Jump'In, Toptac International Ltd, and Equidae/Sixteen Cypress, our pads optimize saddle fit and spinal comfort across Australian disciplines.
Shock-Absorbing Memory Foam, Sheepskin, and Corrective Half Pads
A half pad is one of the most effective tools an equestrian can utilize to improve saddle comfort and protect their horse's back. Placed directly between a cotton square pad and the saddle panels, a half pad absorbs downward kinetic shock from the rider, fills minor asymmetry gaps over the trapezius muscles, and prevents painful pressure hot-spots along the spine. Whether training young horses whose muscle development changes rapidly or riding high-performance jumpers, a quality half pad ensures shock absorption and shoulder clearance.
At iRide EQ, we assemble therapeutic half pads engineered by world-class saddlery houses. Our collection includes impakt foam pads from Equifit, anatomical memory foam pads from Jump'In, practical anti-slip pads from Toptac International Ltd, and luxury sheepskin half pads from Equidae/Sixteen Cypress alongside traditional felt designs from Redgum Saddlery. Each pad is designed with clear gullet channels that keep weight off the spinal processes.

Comparing Half Pad Cushioning Technologies, Fabrics, and Fitting Purpose
Different half pad materials offer unique performance characteristics, ranging from high-density shock dissipation to natural breathability and custom shim placement. The table below details key features, cushioning levels, and ideal uses across common half pad types.
Key Performance Characteristics of Equestrian Half Pads
Memory Foam Contouring vs Sheepskin Shear Reduction
Memory foam half pads react to body heat and rider weight, softening over muscle contours and firming under pressure points. This produces a custom molded fit that stays thin where saddle panels fit tightly while filling hollow pockets behind the shoulder. In contrast, natural sheepskin half pads excel at reducing shear forces and wicking sweat away from the back, making fleece half pads ideal for thin-skinned horses prone to sweat bumps.
Corrective Shim Systems for Saddle Balance
Horses frequently experience muscle changes due to seasonal fitness fluctuations, injury rehabilitation, or aging. Shimmed correction half pads feature internal pockets at the front and rear where felt or foam shims can be inserted or removed. Adjusting shim thickness allows riders to lift a low-front saddle clear of the wither or balance a saddle that tips backward, ensuring temporary saddle balance without reflocking tree panels.
Spine Clearance and Wither Ergonomics
A critical feature of any high-quality half pad is an open, contoured spinal channel. If a pad presses flat across the dorsal spine, it will cause pressure along the spinal processes. Quality pads utilize anatomical swan-neck top lines that tuck up high into the saddle gullet, keeping the spine totally free of weight.
Sizing, Placement, and Fitting Recommendations
A half pad should match the seat length and panel shape of your saddle. When positioned correctly over a cotton square pad, the half pad should extend approximately 2 to 3 cm beyond the front of the saddle pommel and behind the cantle. Avoid using thick memory foam or dense sheepskin pads under saddles that are already fitted tightly across the wither, as adding bulk can pinch the shoulder muscles like wearing a thick sock inside tight shoes.
Cleaning and Care Guidelines
Keep memory foam pads clean by removing the foam core inserts (if removable) and hand-washing outer micro-suede covers in cold water. Sheepskin half pads must be washed using specialized wool wash containing lanolin to preserve natural skin oils, followed by slow air drying out of direct heat and sunlight. Fluff dry sheepskin fleece with a wire dog brush to restore loft.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a half pad if my saddle already fits my horse?
If your saddle is custom-fitted, a thin shock-absorbing memory foam or gel pad can provide impact relief without altering fit. Avoid thick fleece pads if your saddle is already snug.
How do shimmed half pads help adjust saddle balance?
Shim pads feature pockets where thin foam or felt shims can be added to lift the front or rear of the saddle, compensating for temporary muscle asymmetry or atrophy.
Should a half pad sit directly on the horse's skin or over a saddle pad?
In English riding, half pads are almost always placed on top of a thin cotton saddle pad. This keeps the half pad clean from sweat and allows easy washing of the lower pad.
How do I wash a genuine sheepskin half pad?
Machine wash on a wool cycle with cold water using a specialized lanolin wool wash. Line dry in the shade away from heaters, and brush the fleece with a pet slicker brush when dry.
What is the benefit of open-cell memory foam in half pads?
Open-cell memory foam reacts to heat and weight, contouring under high-pressure points to distribute weight evenly across the horse's back without bottoming out.
What size half pad should I buy for a 17-inch saddle?
A Medium/Full size half pad generally fits saddles from 16.5" to 17.5". Check specific product length dimensions to ensure 2 to 3 cm of pad extends beyond panels.
