Selecting High-Performance Horse Bits for Balance, Control, and Contact
A horse bit serves as an essential channel of communication between the rider's hands and the horse's mouth. Finding the right bit is not about applying force; it is about establishing a relaxed, trusting connection that allows clear aid transmission without tension or discomfort. Every horse possesses unique oral conformation, including tongue thickness, palate height, bar sensitivity, and lip width. Matching these physical traits with the correct mouthpiece curvature and cheek hardware transforms your ridden work across all equestrian disciplines.
Australian riders navigate diverse riding conditions, from dusty summer arenas to humid coastal showgrounds and demanding cross-country courses. High-quality horse bits crafted from innovative alloys like blue steel and sweet iron stimulate salivation, encouraging the horse to accept the contact and soften through the jaw, poll, and topline. Whether schooling at home, competing in official Equestrian Australia (EA) dressage classes, or negotiating technical jump courses, investing in anatomically engineered tack enhances responsiveness while respecting equine comfort.

Comparing Horse Bit Types: Snaffles, Leverage, and Specialty Designs
Understanding mechanical differences across bit families helps riders make informed choices based on training stage, rider experience, and discipline rules. While European tack makers like PS of Sweden and Kentaur offer popular European designs, Jump'In bit architecture stands out for its meticulous French craftsmanship and extensive range of mouthpiece materials.

Technical Features, Mouthpiece Materials, and Mechanical Actions
Blue Steel, Sweet Iron, and Salivation Activation
Blue steel and sweet iron mouthpieces oxidize when exposed to air and moisture, developing a thin layer of natural surface rust. This sweet-tasting oxidation stimulates active salivation and relaxes the horse's jaw. As the horse chews and moistens the mouthpiece, the bit warms quickly to body temperature, encouraging soft mouth acceptance. Jump'In blue steel bits feature French links and lozenges that prevent the uncomfortable nutcracker effect associated with traditional single-jointed designs.
Snaffle Action vs Leverage Mechanics
Direct-action bits, commonly known as snaffle bits, operate on a 1:1 pressure ratio where one point of force at the rein yields exactly one point of pressure in the mouth. Leverage options, including leverage bits like Pelhams and gags, utilize shanks or lower ring attachments to magnify rein pressure while transferring force to the poll and chin groove via a curb chain. Understanding this distinction prevents over-bitting and ensures riders select hardware appropriate for their experience level.
Specialty Mouthpieces for Unique Training Demands
When horses exhibit mouth sensitivities, scarring, or behavioral resistance, standard metal bits may prove ineffective. Exploring specialty bits crafted with flexible rubber, anatomical leather, or bitless hackamore leverage offers gentle solutions that rebuild trust and relaxation under saddle.
How to Measure and Fit a Horse Bit Correctly
An incorrectly fitted bit causes pinching, rubbing, and severe discomfort. To measure bit width, place a wooden bit sizer or straight ruler across the horse's mouth at the interdental space (the gap between teeth where the bit rests). Note the measurement in inches or centimeters, adding 0.5cm (1/4 inch) of clearance on each side for loose-ring designs to prevent lip pinching.
When adjusting bit height on the cheekpieces of your horse bridle, aim for one to two smooth wrinkle folds at the corners of the horse's mouth. Ensure the mouthpiece rests comfortably on the bars without hitting the canine teeth in geldings and stallions or molar teeth in mares. Verify that the noseband and browband do not pull the bit upward or twist the cheekpieces out of alignment.
Care Instructions for Metal and Leather Horse Bits
Proper cleaning extends bit life and maintains hygiene. Rinse metal bits under warm water immediately after riding to remove dried saliva, foam, and organic matter. Use a soft brass brush or soft cloth to clean blue steel and sweet iron mouthpieces without stripping the beneficial oxidation layer. Inspect cheek rings, joints, and curb chain links regularly for sharp edges or metal wear.
For bits featuring leather mouthpieces or leather cheek accents, wipe down with a damp cloth and apply specialized leather balsam. For comprehensive guidance on preserving all your leather equipment, consult our leather tack care guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what size bit my horse needs?
Measure the width of your horse's mouth across the interdental space using a bit measure or ruler. Standard sizes range from 4.5 inches (pony) to 5.5 inches (full horse). Allow 0.25 inches of extra clearance on either side for loose ring snaffles to prevent lip pinching.
Why does blue steel rust, and is it safe for my horse?
Blue steel oxidizes upon contact with air and moisture, forming a natural surface rust layer. This rust has a sweet taste that stimulates salivation and encourages bit acceptance. It is completely safe and beneficial for equine mouth relaxation.
What is the main difference between a single-jointed and double-jointed bit?
A single-jointed bit creates a nutcracker effect, pressing down on the tongue and squeezing the bars. A double-jointed bit (French link or lozenge) lays flatter across the tongue, distributing pressure evenly without poking the roof of the mouth.
Are Jump'In bits legal for Equestrian Australia (EA) Dressage?
Many Jump'In double-jointed snaffles, eggbutts, loose rings, and French link designs are EA dressage legal. Always check the latest EA Dressage Rulebook for current mouthpiece and ring diameter specifications before competing.
When should I switch from a snaffle to a leverage bit?
Transitioning to a leverage bit is recommended when a horse requires refined poll and chin control over fences, provided the horse already understands basic steering and leg aids in a snaffle under a skilled rider's hands.
How does an eggbutt cheek differ from a loose ring?
Eggbutt cheeks are fixed directly to the mouthpiece, offering a stable feel in the mouth and preventing lip pinching. Loose rings slide freely through the mouthpiece, providing a more mobile feel for horses that tend to set their jaw.
How should a curb chain be fitted on a Pelham bit?
A curb chain should lie flat against the chin groove, allowing two fingers' width of space when reins are slack. When reins are engaged at a 45-degree angle, the curb chain should engage snugly without cutting into the jaw.
