Quick Answer: Shop horse riding helmets in Australia — certified safety helmets with visor and liner options for show jumping, dressage, Pony Club and everyday riding. Modern helmets featuring carbon fiber outer shells, removable memory foam liners, and temple protection offer uncompromised rider defense.
How to Select an Equestrian Safety Helmet
An equestrian riding helmet is the single most critical item of protective gear a rider wears. Engineered to absorb rotational and direct kinetic energy during an fall, modern safety helmets blend high-tech EPS energy dissipation foam with rigid outer shells. Beyond basic safety testing, helmet choice directly influences airflow comfort, field of vision, and rider confidence in the show ring or out on cross-country courses.
Innovative helmet technology, such as the Voronoi Carbon helmet engineered by Freejump, has redefined head protection. Featuring a distinctive bionic geometry inspired by Voronoi patterns, this groundbreaking helmet incorporates integrated temporal protection to shield vulnerable temple areas. Evaluated rigorously under independent testing protocols, the Voronoi Carbon earned a Virginia Tech 3-star rating for equestrian helmet impact reduction while fully satisfying all international safety benchmarks that meet FEI-accepted standards across global competition disciplines.

Selecting the Right Helmet for Discipline and Climate
Show Jumping & Eventing Phases
Show jumping and cross-country phases present high-impact fall risks where maximum shell strength and temple protection are crucial. Helmets featuring carbon fiber outer structures offer high tensile resistance while keeping overall head weight exceptionally light. Removable moisture-wicking foam liners from Equidae/Sixteen Cypress can be unclipped and machine-washed after strenuous cross-country rounds, keeping your helmet fresh and hygienic.
Dressage & Formal Ring Showing
Dressage competitors seek sleek, elegant helmets with low-profile harness systems that integrate smoothly with hair buns and hair nets. Black, navy, or shadow matte finishes with subtle gloss or carbon trim details create a sophisticated appearance under arena lights. High sun protection options with extended wide visors shield the rider's face and eyes during long outdoor dressage tests held in bright Australian sunlight.
Everyday Arena Schooling & Trail Riding
For daily training sessions and trail rides, ventilation and weight take priority. Helmets engineered with multi-channel internal air passages pull cooler ambient air across the crown while channeling hot air out rear exhaust ports. Pairing a ventilated helmet with non-slip hair accessories and everyday rider accessories makes summer schooling comfortable and secure.
Helmet Fitting and Sizing Recommendations
A riding helmet must fit snugly around the circumference of your head without pinching or leaving painful pressure points on the forehead. To determine your correct size, measure the circumference of your head 1–2 centimeters above your eyebrows and ear tips using a soft tailor's tape measure.
When trying on a new helmet, adjust the harness so the leather chin strap sits securely under your jaw without slack. Rock your head gently forward and back; the helmet should move the skin on your forehead rather than sliding loosely across hair. If the helmet tips forward over your eyes when you shake your head, it is too large or incompatible with your head shape (round versus oval).
Helmet Care, Maintenance, and Replacement Guidelines
Riding helmets require careful maintenance to preserve structural integrity. Store your helmet inside a padded fabric helmet bag in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, car trunks, or chemical fumes. High heat inside parked vehicles degrades EPS impact foam and weakens outer shell bonding glues over time.
Clean external shells with a soft microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap. Never apply solvent cleaners, alcohol sprays, or harsh detergents to helmet surfaces. Wash inner fabric liners regularly in cold water. Crucially, replace your riding helmet immediately following any fall where your head hits the ground, as EPS foam compresses permanently upon impact to protect your brain, rendering the helmet unsafe for subsequent falls. Replace undamaged helmets every 3 to 5 years due to natural UV and sweat foam degradation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What safety standards do iRide EQ helmets meet for Equestrian Australia competition?
All safety helmets sold at iRide EQ meet current Equestrian Australia (EA) regulations, including VG1 01.040, PAS 015, or ASTM F1163 approvals, ensuring they meet FEI-accepted standards across all official competitive disciplines.
What is special about the Freejump Voronoi carbon helmet design?
The Freejump Voronoi helmet features a bionic carbon shell with integrated temporal protection to safeguard vulnerable temple areas, earning a Virginia Tech 3-star rating for impact protection.
How often should I replace my equestrian riding helmet?
Replace your helmet immediately after any impact or fall where your head makes contact. Otherwise, replace undamaged helmets every 3 to 5 years as EPS foam degrades naturally over time from sweat and UV exposure.
How do I know if I have a round or oval head shape for helmet fitting?
If a helmet pinches on your forehead while leaving empty space at the sides, you have an oval head shape. If it fits comfortably front-to-back but pinches near your temples, you have a rounder head profile.
Are wide-visor helmets allowed in official dressage and show jumping?
Yes, wide-visor polo-style helmets are permitted under EA rules across show jumping and dressage, providing enhanced facial sun protection during bright outdoor events.
How should I clean the inside memory foam liner of my helmet?
Unclip the removable inner fabric liner and wash gently by hand in cold water with mild wool detergent. Air dry naturally away from direct heat sources before reattaching.
Can I leave my riding helmet inside my car between weekend rides?
No, storing helmets in hot vehicles damages shock-absorbing EPS foam and structural adhesives. Always store your helmet indoors in a cool, shaded environment inside a protective helmet bag.
