Comprehensive Show Day Preparation and Timing
The Week-Before Checklist: Tidy-Up and Equipment Inspection
Successful show turnout begins days before the event. Trim excess hair around pasterns, jawlines, and ears according to discipline preferences. Clean all leather bridlework, check stitching integrity, and ensure number holder digits are complete. Wash white show pads, ear bonnets, and breeches early so they air-dry perfectly. Confirm entry times and print dressage test sheets or jump course maps to avoid morning confusion.
Night-Before Preparation: Braiding and Packing
Plaited manes enhance neck posture and present a tidy crest to the judges. Plait manes neatly using thread or strong bands the evening prior, securing with a lightweight lycra hood. Clean and polish long riding boots, pack garment bags containing show jackets, and organize your float groom tote with brushes and turnout sprays. Fill water containers and prepare hay bags for the morning travel.
Morning-Of Preparation: Final Polish and Warm-Up
On show morning, allow ample time for final groom touch-ups. Brush coat free of overnight dust, comb tail, apply hoof oil, and set quarter marks. Fit bridle number holders, position noise-cancelling ear bonnets under the crownpiece, and perform a final mirror check before mounting for warm-up. Check ring marshalling numbers to ensure smooth timing as you walk to the collecting arena.
EA Discipline Guidelines and Turnout Rules
Equestrian Australia guidelines specify precise turnout requirements. Official EA Dressage rules require bridle or saddle pad numbers visible on either the left side or both sides. Noise-cancelling ear bonnets are permitted in Jumping and Dressage, provided colors remain subtle and match rider apparel. Dark show jackets with white or cream breeches remain standard for formal competitive classes across regional and state championships.
Caring for Competition Accessories Between Shows
Protect delicate stock pins and crystal number holders in padded storage boxes to avoid scratches. Store white ear bonnets and saddle pads in zip garment bags to keep them dust-free inside your float tack room between competition weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should bridle numbers be placed for EA Dressage?
Equestrian Australia rules state that identification numbers must be clearly displayed on either the left side of the horse (bridle or saddle pad) or on both sides.
Are noise-cancelling ear bonnets legal for EA Dressage competitions?
Yes. EA rules allow noise-cancelling ear bonnets in official dressage tests, provided they are discreet in color and fit properly under the bridle.
How far in advance should I plait my horse's mane for a show?
Plaiting can be completed the evening before the event if protected with a lycra hood, or on show morning for crisp, tight braids.
How do I keep white saddle pads pristine at outdoor Australian shows?
Keep white pads inside protective plastic bags until just before saddling up, and brush off dried sweat promptly after your class before washing in cold water.
What essentials should go into my show morning grooming tote?
Pack hoof oil and applicator, coat shine spray, damp sponge, mane bands, spare number inserts, baby wipes, and a soft body brush for last-minute touch-ups.
Are stock pins required when wearing a formal stock tie?
Yes. A stock pin secures the stock tie folds neatly at the throat, maintaining a crisp, elegant collar line under your show jacket.
How do I secure long hair under a riding helmet for showing?
Use a heavy hair net matching your hair shade, gather hair into a low neat bun using a hair band, and slip the net securely over ears before donning your helmet.
