Finding Specialized Bits for Specific Training Needs and Mouth Ergonomics
Specialty horse bits provide custom solutions for equestrians navigating specific training hurdles, physical mouth sensitivities, or behavioral resistances under saddle. When standard snaffles or conventional leverage options lead to mouth tension, tongue backing, or head shaking, specialty designs introduce innovative materials and mechanical pressure combinations. From ultra-soft leather and flexible elastomers to bitless hackamores, these specialty tools restore mouth relaxation and trust.
Australian equestrians competing in show jumping, eventing, or rehabilitating off-track horses benefit greatly from Jump'In's expert French craftsmanship. Incorporating high-grade specialty bits into your training kit provides alternatives that accommodate low palates, scarred bars, or thin skin. Combined with ergonomic horse bridles, supple horse reins, and proper schooling, specialty hardware helps riders resolve complex contact issues with empathy and precision.

Technical Innovations, Materials, and Problem-Solving Features
Natural Leather Mouthpieces and Saliva Absorption
Leather mouthpieces represent one of the most comfortable options for sensitive horses. As the horse chews, the natural leather absorbs saliva, softening completely and molding to the contours of the horse's tongue and interdental bars. This warmth and organic feel encourage nervous or previously traumatized horses to relax their jaw and chew contentedly.
Bitless Hackamores and Combination Systems
For horses recovering from dental surgery, mouth injuries, or severe bit trauma, bitless hackamores bypass the mouth entirely, placing pressure across the bridge of the nose, poll, and chin groove. Combination or tandem bits blend hackamore nose pressure with traditional mouth contact, sharing rein forces across multiple points so riders maintain braking control without over-bitting the mouth.
Soft Elastomer and Rubber Formulations
Jump'In's specialized rubber and elastomer mouthpieces are formulated without toxic chemicals or harsh synthetic smells. Designed to withstand biting while offering flexible cushion, these mouthpieces are ideal for young horses transitioning into ridden work or keen jumpers requiring a soft feel on landing.
Fitting, Sizing, and Adjustment for Specialty Hardware
Proper fitting is crucial when using specialty bits. Leather and soft rubber mouthpieces must be measured accurately to match tongue width, ensuring the material sits flat without twisting. When fitting a hackamore or combination noseband, position the padded nose plate approximately two fingers above the nostrils to avoid obstructing delicate nasal cartilage.
When attaching cheekpieces from your jumping bridle or halters to tandem or hackamore shanks, ensure the straps do not pinch the cheekbones or rub against the eyes. Verify that rein attachment points move freely without binding.
Care Instructions for Leather and Rubber Specialty Bits
Leather mouthpieces require dedicated care. Rinse thoroughly with clean water after riding to remove food particles and foam. Allow the leather to air dry naturally away from direct sunlight, then apply a food-safe vegetable oil or specialized bit leather balm to preserve suppleness. Do not use synthetic chemical cleaners or saddle soaps on mouthpieces.
For rubber and elastomer bits, wash with warm water and a mild dish soap, inspecting the surface for tooth cuts or deep grooves. For detailed tips on maintaining all your leather tack, explore our leather tack care guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the advantage of a leather bit mouthpiece?
Leather mouthpieces become soft and warm when wet with saliva, molding perfectly to the horse's tongue shape and providing an organic feel ideal for sensitive mouths.
How does a hackamore bitless system work?
A hackamore bypasses the mouth entirely, utilizing shank leverage to apply pressure across the nose bridge, poll, and chin groove when reins are engaged.
Are specialty rubber and leather bits allowed in EA Dressage?
Some soft straight-bar rubber snaffles are permitted in EA Dressage, but leather mouthpieces, gags, and hackamores are generally restricted to jumping, eventing, or home training.
How do I care for a leather mouthpiece bit?
Rinse with warm water after every ride, allow to dry naturally in the shade, and nourish regularly with food-safe vegetable oil or dedicated leather bit balm.
What is a tandem combination bit?
A tandem bit combines a hackamore noseband with a traditional bit mouthpiece, distributing rein pressure between the nose and mouth for balanced control.
Where should a hackamore noseband sit on the horse's face?
A hackamore noseband should rest approximately two fingers above the top of the soft nasal cartilage to ensure unrestricted breathing and avoid bone pressure.
How to Care for Your Tack
Proper care extends the life of your equestrian equipment and keeps it performing at its best. For leather items, wipe down after each use with a damp cloth to remove sweat and dirt, then condition every few weeks with a quality leather balm. Store tack in a dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight. For synthetic materials, hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water, then air dry. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or fabric softeners which can degrade technical fabrics and reduce their lifespan. With regular maintenance, quality equestrian gear should last multiple seasons of regular use.
