Quick Answer: Shop horse rugs in Australia — turnout, stable and fly rugs from lightweight summer to heavyweight winter, with neck rugs and liners for every season.
Advanced Horse Rug Accessories for All-Season Turnout and Travel
Horse rugging in Australia presents significant seasonal challenges, from searing summer heat and intense fly pressure to freezing winter nights and muddy paddocks. Equipping your horse with technical rug accessories ensures optimal coat health, prevents friction sores over high-pressure skeletal points, and extends the lifespan of your outer turnout gear. Protective shoulder liners and wither guards distribute strap tension evenly across the chest and spine, maintaining smooth hair coats even during continuous winter wearing.
By incorporating cutting-edge materials from leading equestrian innovators like Equifit, horse owners can deliver localized pressure relief and breathability where traditional canvas or ripstop rugs fall short. Whether preparing a competition horse for float travel or shielding a sensitive thoroughbred from paddock rubs, our specialized rugging accessories combine moisture-wicking linings, antimicrobial foam, and resilient outer fabrics built to withstand daily stable conditions in Australia.

Key Features of Technical Horse Rug Accessories
Shoulder and Chest Rub Prevention
Shoulder rubs occur when heavy canvas or synthetic turnout rugs drag backward against the point of the shoulder during grazing or lying down. A smooth, four-way stretch lycra shoulder guard worn beneath the main rug creates a frictionless layer, allowing the outer rug to slide without pulling hair roots out. Models with integrated chest padding further cushion front buckle closures, ensuring total freedom of movement across the chest and forelegs.
Wither Pressure Relief Systems
High-withered horses or narrow thoroughbreds often experience localized pressure sores from heavy winter combos. Wither relief pads constructed from open-cell memory foam elevate the rug arch clear of the spinal processes. This prevents pressure necrosis and maintains healthy blood circulation over the dorsal spinal ligament, ensuring horse comfort throughout long stabling periods. Using anatomically shaped wither cushions distributes total garment weight evenly over surrounding muscle groups rather than bone.
Climate Control and Sweat Management
When traveling in horse floats or standing in wash bays after strenuous cross-country training, rapid sweat cooling is critical to prevent muscle stiffness. Technical mesh cooler sheets draw moisture upward off the skin to the outer fabric layer, where ambient airflow evaporates heat quickly. In hot Australian summer conditions, UV-reflective mesh rugs also protect dark coats from sun bleaching while keeping biting flies and midges away from sensitive skin.
Sizing and Fitting Guidelines for Horse Rug Accessories
Proper fit is vital to ensure rug accessories perform safely without slipping or bunching up under main rugs. Measure your horse from the center of the chest, around the curve of the shoulder, to the furthest point of the rump level with the tail. Shoulder guards are sized by horse height or chest circumference (Pony, Cob, Full, Extra Full). Ensure the neck opening sits snugly above the shoulder blade without binding the windpipe or pulling back on the throatlatch. Check all leg straps and surcingles daily to ensure proper tension without binding or dangling loops.
Cleaning and Storage Recommendations
To preserve technical elastic fibers and waterproof coatings, regularly wash rug accessories to remove dried sweat, grease, and dirt. Fasten all hook-and-loop straps prior to washing. Machine wash on a gentle 30°C cold water cycle using non-biological liquid wash. Air dry naturally out of direct summer sunlight. Store clean, dry rug accessories in breathable storage bags during warmer off-season months to protect against mold, dampness, and rodents in the tack room.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop my horse's turnout rug from rubbing the shoulders?
Fitting a smooth, anti-rub lycra or silky shoulder guard underneath the rug provides a frictionless barrier. Ensure the main rug has correct shoulder gussets and is not too tight across the chest.
Can my horse wear a shoulder guard 24 hours a day?
Yes, lightweight breathable shoulder guards are designed for continuous wear under stable or turnout rugs. Remove and inspect the skin daily to ensure cleanliness and comfort.
What is the purpose of a memory foam wither pad?
A wither pad sits under the front arch of heavy winter rugs to lift the fabric off the horse's spine, preventing pressure sores and hair loss over high wither bones.
How do I measure my horse for a shoulder guard?
Match the size to your horse's standard rug size or height range: Small/Pony (under 14hh), Medium/Cob (14.2hh–15.2hh), Large/Full (15.2hh–16.2hh), and Extra Large (16.2hh+).
How do mesh cooler sheets work after intense riding?
Mesh cooler sheets utilize 3D honeycomb weave fabric that pulls moisture off the coat while allowing cool air to circulate, preventing rapid chill while muscle temperature stabilizes.
How should I wash specialized Equifit rug accessories?
Close all velcro fastenings and place items in a mesh laundry bag. Machine wash on a cold, delicate setting using mild detergent, then line dry in the shade.
