Key Accessory Categories for Modern Equestrian Saddles

Protective Covers and Float Travel Bags

Dust, humidity, and direct sunlight are major causes of prematurely aged saddlery. A fitted waterproof saddle cover with elastic hem tailoring secures tightly over the pommel, seat, and cantle, sealing out moisture. For float travel or competition trips, heavy-duty padded saddle bags with carry handles protect calfskin flaps from impact marks and hardware scuffs.

Stirrup Sleeves and Billet Protectors

When stirrup irons are run up on leathers after riding, metal treads or cheese-grater cheese plates rest directly against soft leather flaps. Fitting elasticized neoprene stirrup sleeves over the irons completely isolates metal edges, eliminating flap scratches. Similarly, leather billet guards protect under-flaps from girth buckle friction, maintaining smooth leather surfaces on long-billet saddles.

Leather Care and Conditioning Formulations

Australian arenas expose leather tack to sweat salt, grit, and harsh sun. Maintaining full-grain leather requires routine cleaning with glycerine saddle soap to open pores, followed by deep conditioning with beeswax balsam or natural oils. Regular conditioning preserves fiber flexibility, prevents stitching rot, and keeps dark leather rich in color across seasons.

Compatibility, Sizing, and Fit Considerations

When purchasing saddle covers or seat savers, select the pattern designed for your specific saddle discipline. Jump saddle covers feature cut-forward flap shaping to accommodate forward knee rolls, whereas dressage covers feature deeper, longer flap drops. Seat savers are sized according to seat measurement (16.5" to 18") and should attach securely around the pommel and cantle without shifting under rider weight.

Maintenance and Care Recommendations

Keep fabric saddle covers and neoprene stirrup sleeves clean by washing them regularly in cold water to remove dust and arena dirt. For leather accessories such as billet guards and number holders, wipe down sweat after every ride with a damp sponge and store in a dry, ventilated tack room away from direct heat sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stirrup covers when my saddle is stored?

Running stirrups up leathers leaves metal treads resting against soft calfskin flaps. Stirrup covers cushion the metal, preventing scratches and dent marks during storage or float travel.

How often should I condition my leather saddle and accessories?

Wipe off surface sweat after every ride. Apply a thorough leather balm or conditioner every 2 to 4 weeks, or immediately after riding in wet weather to restore oil balance.

Are jump saddle covers suitable for dressage saddles?

It is best to choose a discipline-specific cover. Dressage covers have longer, straighter flap drops, whereas jump covers feature forward-cut flap shapes that will not fit long dressage panels neatly.

What is the purpose of leather billet guards?

Billet guards slip over girth straps to shield the under-flap of your saddle from metal girth buckle friction, preventing gouges and premature leather thinning.

How do gel seat savers attach to the saddle?

Gel seat savers feature elastic straps that slip over the cantle and pommel, securing snugly underneath the saddle channel without interfering with girth billet straps.

Can I wash my waterproof saddle cover in a washing machine?

Yes, wash fabric saddle covers on a cold gentle cycle with mild detergent, and line dry out of direct sunlight to protect waterproof coatings.
