Quick Answer: Shop horse whips in Australia — dressage whips, jumping crops and schooling bats in legal competition lengths for dressage, jumping and everyday training. Dressage whips measure between 100cm and 120cm with a flexible lash for precise touching behind the leg, while jumping bats are shorter (50cm to 75cm) with a wide leather popper for quick contact over fences.
Selecting the Ideal Horse Riding Whip for Your Discipline
Effective communication in equestrian sport relies on soft, precise aids. A well-balanced riding whip acts as an educational extension of your leg and seat aids, reinforcing cues during lateral movements, collection exercises, or impulsion training without harsh force. When choosing a whip, feel and balance are paramount; a top-heavy or overly rigid whip strains your wrist and creates unintended tension through your reins and shoulders.
Handle design and shaft flex are crucial factors. Leather-wrapped handles with contrast stitching deliver timeless elegance and tactile grip for formal presentation, whereas textured rubber grips provide non-slip security during wet weather or hot Australian training sessions. Paired with high-performance riding gloves, a quality whip ensures subtle cues and instant responsiveness from your horse.
Quick Facts
Best ForDressage training, jumping, eventing, schooling, and showing
Selecting between a dressage whip and a jumping bat depends entirely on your discipline, saddle position, and how you intend to apply aids. Dressage whips feature long, slender shafts that reach past the saddle flap to tap the horse's flank or hindquarter without requiring the rider to shift hand position or drop rein contact. Jumping bats feature shorter, stiffer construction designed for brief encouragement over fences without tangling in reins or martingale straps.

Types of Horse Riding Whips
Dressage Whips
Dressage whips feature long, lightweight fiberglass or carbon core shafts wrapped in woven nylon or leather. They allow riders to touch the horse's flank or lower leg without breaking upper body alignment or dropping the hands. Handcrafted leather handle models from Belle Equestrian feature silver caps, white contrast stitching, and ergonomic mushroom tops that prevent the whip from sliding through gloved fingers.
Rubber Grip Dressage Whips
For daily schooling, wet days, or summer rides in dusty arenas, rubber grip dressage whips offer maximum tactile control. The textured spiral rubber handle ensures firm hold even when sweaty, preventing wrist fatigue during long training sessions. Their resilient construction stands up to daily stable use across all Australian weather conditions.
Jumping Crops & Bats
Jumping crops feature a shorter, rigid shaft fitted with a leather popper at the end that produces a distinct slapping sound without stinging the horse. This acoustic cue encourages impulsion and focus when approaching fences. They are designed to sit unobtrusively in the rider's hand alongside the rein grip.
Riding Whip Length & Regulations Guide
Riders competing under Equestrian Australia (EA) regulations must adhere to strict rules regarding whip lengths and usage across disciplines. In official EA dressage competitions, the maximum permitted total length for a whip (including the lash) is 120cm for horses and 100cm for ponies. Carrying a whip is permitted in EA dressage warm-ups and tests up to specified levels, but always verify current rulebook updates prior to your class.
In show jumping, crops must not exceed 75cm in total length and must feature a wide popper. Misuse or excessive reliance on a whip is strictly penalised across all EA disciplines. Choosing a whip with comfortable weighting encourages correct, minimal application, serving as a gentle cueing tool alongside your seat and rider training aids.
How to Maintain and Store Riding Whips
Proper storage prevents riding whips from developing permanent bends or damaged lashes. Never lean a long dressage whip against a wall or leave it lying on the ground, as the shaft can warp under heat and weight. Always hang whips vertically from a dedicated whip rack or loop by the handle end in a dry tack room.
Keep leather-wrapped handles clean by wiping them gently with a damp sponge and applying a light leather conditioner periodically to prevent sweat salts from drying out the leather. Rubber grips can be washed with mild soap and water to remove dirt build-up. Avoid leaving whips inside hot vehicles or exposed to direct Australian sunlight, as extreme heat can degrade internal flex cores and synthetic coatings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum whip length allowed for EA dressage competitions?
Under Equestrian Australia rules, the maximum length for a dressage whip (including the lash) is 120cm for horses and 100cm for ponies. Always check specific event guidelines as carrying whips may be restricted in certain championship classes.
Should I choose a leather or rubber grip dressage whip?
Leather handles offer classic elegance, luxurious feel, and polished presentation ideal for competition. Rubber grips provide non-slip traction and durability suited for daily schooling and wet weather training.
How do I hold a dressage whip properly while riding?
Hold the whip handle diagonally across your thigh, with your thumb securing the whip handle against your rein. The shaft should rest lightly across your leg without swaying as your horse moves.
How are riding whips shipped to prevent damage or bending?
iRide EQ packs all riding whips in specially reinforced protective mail tubes or rigid boxes. This prevents the fiberglass or carbon core from bending or snapping during transit across Australia.
Can a whip be used alongside spur aids?
Yes, experienced riders often use a whip in combination with subtle leg aids or spurs to reinforce cues during advanced training. The whip acts as an occasional secondary reinforcer to clarify seat and leg signals.
Do you offer fast shipping across regional Australia?
Yes, all orders are dispatched locally from within Australia with tracking provided immediately upon dispatch.
Can I purchase riding whips using AfterPay?
Yes, AfterPay and ZipPay are available at checkout, allowing you to spread payments into convenient instalments.
