Quick Answer: Shop breastplates and martingales in Australia — running, standing and Irish styles for jumping security, in quality leather to match your bridle.
Anatomical Leather Breastplates and Running Martingales
A breastplate or martingale serves a vital dual function in English riding: securing saddle positioning against backward motion during dynamic movement and helping riders maintain controlled head carriage over fences. High-performance jumping and eventing horses generate tremendous power through the hindquarters and shoulders when leaping across oxers or navigating hilly cross-country tracks. An anatomically shaped breastplate distributes pulling forces evenly across the chest and shoulder blades without restricting windpipe or muscle contraction.
iRide EQ curates breastplates and martingale attachments produced by elite tack houses including Jump'In and Lady Godiva Equestrian. Crafted from full-grain vegetable-tanned European leather, padded with soft sheepskin or gel inserts, and finished with solid stainless steel or brass fittings, these designs withstand severe Australian arena and paddock elements while maintaining luxurious aesthetic appeal.

Comparing Breastplate Styles, Martingale Attachments, and Fit Profiles
Choosing between 3-point elastic, 5-point hunting, or standalone martingale attachments depends on your horse's anatomy, saddle shape, and athletic discipline. The table below details key features, force distribution points, and ideal applications across common breastplate configurations.

To establish a balanced tack setup, pair your breastplate with a complementary bridle or jumping bridle, secure your saddle with an anatomical girth, and maintain sensitive mouth contact using supple reins. Complete your saddlery equipment with protective saddle accessories.
Key Features of Anatomical Breastplates and Martingales
3-Point vs 5-Point Force Distribution
A classic 3-point breastplate attaches to the saddle D-rings or billet straps and passes down between the front legs to the girth loop. This lightweight setup is popular in show jumping arenas because woven elastic side panels expand as the horse extends its neck over fences. In contrast, a 5-point breastplate adds two upper attachments over the wither, distributing pull across five distinct anchor zones. This extra security makes 5-point breastplates preferred for eventing riders tackling water jumps, banks, and drop fences.
Running Martingale Mechanics and Rein Stop Positioning
Running martingales split into two leather forks ending in stainless steel rings through which the reins slide. When a horse keeps its head in a normal frame, the martingale rings lie slack, exerting zero pressure on the bit. If the horse raises its head above the level of the wither, the rings press downward on the reins, transferring bit pressure to the bars of the mouth until the horse lowers its head. Rubber rein stops placed on the reins between the bit rings and martingale rings are mandatory to prevent the martingale rings from sliding forward and getting caught on bit shanks or buckles.
Anatomical Shoulder Clearance and Padding
Poorly fitted breastplates can bind across the shoulder muscles or pinch at the wither point. Modern anatomical breastplates feature curved leather straps that follow the natural angle of the scapula, keeping the point of the shoulder completely uninhibited. Removable sheepskin or gel pads at the sternum and wither rings cushion impact forces and absorb sweat during intense exercise.
Fitting and Adjustment Guidelines
A correctly fitted breastplate should sit snug against the horse's chest without binding skin or pulling the saddle down into the wither. You should easily fit a flat hand beneath the sternum plate and two fingers under shoulder straps. The neck ring should sit high enough on the neck so it does not press against the windpipe when the horse's head is lowered. Adjust running martingale rings so they reach up to the horse's throatlatch when pulled upward along the neck.
Care and Maintenance Instructions
Breastplates sit directly against sweat-prone areas of the chest and girth groove. Wipe away dried sweat, lather, and arena dirt after every ride using a damp sponge and glycerine tack soap. Apply leather oil or cream monthly to keep leather straps soft and resilient. Inspect snaps, elastic webbing, and buckle holes frequently for signs of stretching, dry rot, or metal wear.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the primary reason to use a breastplate on a horse?
A breastplate stops the saddle from sliding backward, especially on horses with high withers, flat rib cages, or when jumping large obstacles and galloping up inclines.
How does a running martingale differ from a standing martingale?
A running martingale splits into two rings that slide on the reins, acting only when the horse raises its head too high. A standing martingale clips directly to the noseband and gives a static limit.
Why are rubber rein stops mandatory with running martingales?
Rein stops prevent the martingale rings from sliding forward toward the bit rings where they could catch on bit buckles or studs, potentially locking the horse's head in a dangerous position.
Which is better for show jumping: 3-point or 5-point breastplates?
3-point elastic breastplates are lighter and offer sleek freedom for show jumping. 5-point breastplates provide maximum multi-angle stability preferred for eventing cross-country.
How do I check if my breastplate is too tight?
You should be able to slide a flat hand under the center chest ring and two fingers comfortably beneath shoulder straps. If skin bunches or shoulder motion is restricted, loosen buckles.
How should I clean my leather breastplate?
Wipe sweat off leather and sheepskin pads with a damp cloth after riding. Clean leather with glycerine soap and condition regularly with quality leather balm.
