Building a horse's early balance education on the flat and over small fences? The Jump'In French Mouth Full Cheek Gag marries the rebalancing action of a gag with full cheek steering and the palate-friendly French mouth centre - the full cheek family's all-rounder for balance lessons.

How it works: gag rings slide as rein pressure builds, prompting the horse to lift and shift weight onto its hindquarters, with strength scaling on ring size. Full cheek arms answer the other half of the equation - direction - so the horse learning to rebalance doesn't simultaneously learn to run through the outside aids. The French mouth centre keeps the roof of the mouth free of pressure while all that happens. Special gag cheekpieces required; two reins, loops, or four.

Why we rate it: Jump'In summarises the design as 'combines balance and direction', and for green or reminded-needing horses that is exactly the right pair of lessons delivered together. We ride it four-reined in training as standard. German silver (65% copper, 23% zinc, 12% nickel); rinse the slides after use. See our leverage bits range.

— Sizes: 125 mm (5 in) or 135 mm (5.25 in).
