Quick Answer: Shop saddle pads and numnahs in Australia — dressage, jumping and all-purpose pads in cotton, bamboo and technical fabrics, in show and training colours. Dressage riders require a square drop pad, while jumping riders need a forward-cut contour. Combining a quality pad with a shock-absorbing half pad ensures optimal saddle fit, comfort, and performance across all Australian riding conditions.

How to Choose the Right Saddle Pad for Your Horse

Saddle pads are a vital interface between your saddle and your horse's back. A high-performance saddle pad does far more than keep your saddle clean; it absorbs heavy sweat, distributes rider weight evenly across the thoracic muscles, and eliminates friction over sensitive spinal processes. Whether you are schooling in the summer heat of Queensland, competing at an Equestrian Australia event, or hacking out through coastal trails, selecting the correct pad is essential for equine comfort and freedom of movement.

When selecting a saddle pad, consider your primary discipline, your saddle's cut, and your horse's conformation. High-wither horses require anatomical contouring along the topline to prevent downward pressure on the wither. In Australian riding environments, moisture management is paramount. Advanced technical linings like 3D air-mesh, waffle cotton, and natural bamboo fleece draw sweat away from the skin, preventing heat buildup and gall marks during intensive training sessions.

Saddle Pad Materials & Fabrics Compared

Different outer fabrics and internal linings offer distinct advantages for training and competition turnout. Modern technical textiles have revolutionized saddle pad performance, offering superior breathability and durability compared to traditional plain cotton pads. When evaluating premium pads from top manufacturers, comparing lining materials helps you choose the best combination of shock absorption and thermal regulation. Popular choices on the market—including competition pads from PS of Sweden, Acavallo, and Kentaur—highlight the importance of selecting the right weave and fill for your horse's skin sensitivity.

Material / Lining	Breathability	Moisture Wicking	Durability	Best Application	Price Range
Waffle Cotton Blend	High	Moderate	High	Everyday schooling and training	$60 – $110
Technical Bamboo Mesh	Exceptional	Exceptional	High	Hot summer riding and sensitive skin	$110 – $180
3D Air-Mesh Synthetic	Maximum	High	Very High	High-intensity jumping & cross country	$120 – $190
Satin Finish with Quick-Dry	Moderate	High	Moderate-High	Competition turnout & show ring	$130 – $210
Fleece / Faux Sheepskin Lined	Moderate	High	High	Impact absorption & pressure relief	$150 – $250

To further enhance shock absorption and customize saddle balance, pair your primary pad with specialized half pads or anatomical girths designed for freedom of movement behind the elbow.

Saddle Pad Shapes & Discipline Categories

Dressage Saddle Pads

Dressage saddle pads are characterized by a long, straight drop cut specifically tailored to fit long-flap dressage saddles. These pads offer a clean, formal profile that complements the elegant lines of dressage competition turnout. High swan-neck wither cutouts ensure that the pad pulls up securely into the saddle gullet without pulling down onto the wither. Designed to handle intense sitting trot work and lateral movements, quality dressage pads stay firmly in place throughout your test.

Jumping Saddle Pads

Jumping saddle pads feature a forward-swept anatomical cut that mirrors the forward flap of close-contact jumping saddles. This design prevents excess fabric from bunching under short jumping girths while providing full protection where the saddle flap contacts the horse's barrel. Lightweight construction and reinforced girth wear patches ensure these pads withstand the rigors of show jumping gridwork and cross-country galloping.

General Purpose & All-Round Numnahs

General purpose saddle pads feature an intermediate cut suitable for GP saddles, pleasure riding, and multi-discipline training. These versatile pads are ideal for riders who enjoy hacking, low-level dressage, and casual jumping. Shaped numnahs follow the exact outline of the saddle for a minimalist look, while full square pads provide ample surface area for sponsor logos or personalized embroidery.

Anatomical Fit, Wither Clearance & Spine Relief

Correct saddle pad fit is essential to prevent sore backs and muscle restriction. Always pull the saddle pad up into the saddle gullet before tightening the girth. This creates a dome over the wither and spine, allowing air to circulate and eliminating downward pressure. Look for pads with pre-shaped anatomical spine seams that naturally lift away from the horse's back. Reinforced girth straps with multiple loops ensure your pad stays secure, whether you are using traditional long girth straps or short dressage billets. Complement your setup with matching ear bonnets or a coordinated bridle for a polished arena look.

Caring for Your Saddle Pads in Australian Conditions

Australian riding conditions subject saddle pads to heavy dust, sweat, and intense UV exposure. Regular care extends the lifespan of your pads and protects your horse from skin irritation. Brush off dried sweat and hair with a soft rubber curry comb after every ride before washing. Machine wash on a gentle 30°C cold cycle using non-biological, mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, as they clog technical moisture-wicking fibers and reduce breathability. Always line dry in the shade to prevent fading and maintain elastane elasticity. Keeping extra pads in rotation ensures you always have a fresh, clean pad ready for competition day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size saddle pad my horse needs?

Standard full-size saddle pads fit horses 14.2hh and above, accommodating saddles from 16.5 inches to 18 inches. Cob or pony size pads suit smaller horses and ponies with saddles under 16 inches. Always check that the pad extends at least 2–3 cm beyond the saddle panels on all sides to prevent edge pressure points.

What is the main difference between a dressage pad and a jump pad?

Dressage pads have a straight, square drop cut to match long-flap dressage saddles. Jump pads have a forward-angled, shorter cut designed to fit close-contact jumping saddles with forward knee rolls. Using the correct shape ensures proper flap coverage and prevents excess fabric under short girths.

Can I use a saddle pad without a half pad?

Yes, if your saddle is custom-fitted to your horse, a single quality saddle pad is usually sufficient. However, if your horse needs temporary shim adjustment, seasonal muscle support, or extra shock absorption over big fences, adding a half pad offers versatile cushioning.

How do I stop my saddle pad from slipping backwards during a ride?

Slippage is usually caused by insufficient wither clearance when saddling up, incorrect girth attachment, or poor saddle fit. Ensure you lift the pad high into the gullet before girthing up, attach D-ring or girth retention straps securely, and check that your girth is properly tensioned.

Are white saddle pads required for Equestrian Australia competition?

White saddle pads are standard and traditional for official Equestrian Australia dressage competitions and formal show classes. However, for show jumping, eventing cross-country, and unofficial competitions, conservative dark colors or bright cross-country colors are widely accepted under EA rules.

How often should I wash my saddle pad?

Wash your saddle pad every 3 to 5 rides in mild weather, or after every ride if your horse sweats heavily in summer. Salt crust from dried sweat hardens fibers and causes friction galling, so maintaining clean pads is vital for equine skin health.

What is the best way to clean white competition saddle pads?

Pre-treat grass stains and mud spots with a gentle stain remover or oxygen bleach before washing. Wash on a cold gentle cycle with mild detergent, avoid chlorine bleach which can weaken fibers, and line dry in sunlight to naturally brighten the fabric.
