If one bit shape belongs in the kit of every breaking-and-educating yard in Australia, it's the plain full cheek - and Jump'In's Full Cheek Bit is the definitive version: two arms, direct action, nothing else. It exists to make steering obvious to horses that are still learning what reins mean.

How it works: the long upper and lower arms rest against the horse's cheeks, so a turning aid is guided by gentle pressure on the outside of the face rather than drag across the mouth, keeping the mouthpiece centred and the cue unmistakable. There is no lever action anywhere in the design, so what the horse feels is an honest, unamplified version of the rider's hand - the reason Jump'In rates this its best format for channelling a horse, solving directional issues and starting young horses.

Why we rate it: the arms also stop the bit sliding through the mouth when a green mind has a sudden opinion about a float, a dog or a show banner. Fit keepers or don't - it works either way. German silver (65% copper, 23% zinc, 12% nickel), machined by a French jumping specialist that knows this shape's job better than anyone. Rinse after each ride, and compare across our snaffle bits.

— Sizes: 115 mm (4.5 in), 125 mm (5 in) or 135 mm (5.25 in).
