Balance work is what the Jump'In Squared Twisted Full Cheek Gag does - it's a bit for teaching a horse to rebalance onto its hindquarters, and it rewards an educated rider who knows how to set it up. Novices should steer clear; this one needs special gag cheekpieces and a plan.

How it works: sliding gag rings ask the horse to lift and rebalance as rein pressure engages; the bigger the gag rings, the stronger that effect, per Jump'In's own spec. The full cheek cheeks add directional control, so the rebalancing never costs you steering. Ride it with two reins directly, with bit loops, or with four reins for a snaffle-plus-gag split. The thick squared twisted cannons suit anatomically large mouths.

Why we rate it: used well, it's genuinely corrective - the horse that travels on the forehand learns to carry itself. Used casually, it's overkill; choose accordingly. My honest preference is four reins for control, schooling only. German silver (65% copper, 23% zinc, 12% nickel). It needs the right bridle accessories to run - a true specialist tool.
