Heavy in the hand, leaning on the rein, bracing through the jaw - the horse Jump'In built the Mac Genis bit for is the tense one. Its solution is clever: squared cannons with free-spinning copper rings set right into the mouthpiece, giving the tongue something to play with while the big flat cheeks organise the steering.

How it works: the copper rings inside the cannons invite the horse to mouth and relax the jaw, while the squared cannon profile keeps the contact defined without being severe. The large flat rings (90 mm) add a light lever effect and better direction, so you spend less time steering and more time riding. Construction details: 12 mm cannons in German silver (65% copper, 23% zinc, 12% nickel) with 100% copper mouthing rings.

Why we rate it: a favourite format with Jump'In riders on horses that carry tension into work. It rewards the busy mouth without ever asking the rider to get stronger - copper is there to be played with, and the play is what softens the contact. If your horse leans, trial this before anything with leverage. Rinse the rings after each ride; they spin better clean. More snaffle bits in the full range.

— Sizes: 125 mm (5 in) or 135 mm (5.25 in).
